Selections are usually made 2 years in advance, and successful candidates are considered for residency training deferment through the phs cord Program until their effective date of appointment.Although appointments are not limited to those who qualify for the Com missioned Corps of the phs, most Associates enter nih as commissioned officers. For young men who have not fulfilled their military obligation under Selective Service, this obligation can be discharged as Commissioned Officers of the phs while doing work that will contribute to their growth in chosen fields of interest. The residency deferment program, financial re wards, and other benefits gained by the Public Health Service Commissioned Officer are explained in Part Two of this publication.Appointees are designated as Clinical Associates, Research Associates, and Staff Associates. Each Associate is assigned to a preceptor under whose direction he participates in a research program.
