»Enlightened Rationalisation. An Attempt to reinterpret Max Weber«
This study uses a selection of texts and text passages to give a new voice to Weber. Weber is portrayed as an immensely versatile, open, even contradictory, >anti-systemic< thinker who turns to the phenomena and who reacts to the upheavals of the time. To use a term from musicology, his thinking can be described as >polyphonic<. It is a way of thinking that sees diversity and difference as enrichment, that does not try to resolve tensions and contradictions, but allows and acknowledges them, and that encourages an attitude of tolerance.
Weber focuses on the phenomenon of rationalisation, whose one-sided and purpose-oriented understanding he tries to extent, >enlighten<. Weber addresses the Janus-headedness of contemporary rationalisation, its destructive potentiality, but nevertheless holds on to it, because rationalisation means material and cultural wealth. However, it draws attention to the price to be paid for one-sidedness.
The paper interprets passages from the sociology of religion, the famous lectures, »Economy and Society«, the sociology of music. It is interpreted as a theory of decay of rationalisation. A >war of sounds< is raging. Weber's theory of rationality as well as his theory of values can be regarded as a >philosophy< whose characteristic is pluralism. His correspondence contains a >Minissima Moralia<, a >tiny moral theory<. The close connections to the motives of (American) pragmatism are highlighted: Weber, according to the thesis, is a >would-be<, an >almost< pragmatist.
Weber's language, which contains numerous metaphors, is a topic in its own right. They show a substructure of his thought that tells us where Weber sees the way into the future.
