August Sander: People of the 20th Century

A landmark in the history of photography, People of the 20th Century presents the complete set of portraits from August Sander's monumental endeavor to create an archive of twentieth-century humanity through a cross section of German culture.
This encyclopedic project spans three eras―the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Nazi regime―and extends to the furthest reaches of professional, bohemian, and polite society. For over forty years, Sander took hundreds of portraits of the German people and then categorized them by social type and occupation―from farm laborers to circus performers to bankers and aristocrats--to form a fascinating social mirror of Germany between the wars.
While this project was ultimately never completed, Sander's visual archive reached over six hundred photographs divided into seven volumes and nearly fifty portfolios. Now made available again, People of the 20th Century brings together the images and original texts of the long out-of-print, seven-volume edition. A culmination of Sander's immense vision and photographic talent, this all-in-one volume provides the most comprehensive iteration of what Sander envisioned as "the face of our time.”
