Excerpt from Aus Dem Jahrhundert Des Großen KriegesGustav freytag, one of the most prominent and famous prose-writers of the latter half of the present century, was born at Kreuzberg in Silesia, July 13, 1816. His birthplace, near the Polish frontier but in Prussian territory, inspired him with a strong feeling of his German nationality as well as with that loyalty to the State that is so characteristic of Prussia, while his Protestant training developed that reliance upon per sonal judgment and sense of the worth of the individual that has always distinguished Protestantism. He received his gym nasial training at Oels, and studied at Breslau and Berlin, taking his degree in Teutonic philology at the latter Uni versity in 1838. The next eight years were spent as a privat docent at Breslau. He lectured successfully on mediaeval and modern German literature, but an academic career did not afford him the sphere of activity that he desired. His broad interest in life had directed his studies toward the history of German civilization and, upon the refusal of the faculty to allow him to lecture on that subject, he severed his connec tion with the University and determined to devote himself to literature instead of academic teaching. Dramatic work first claimed his attention, but in the autumn of 1846 he went to Leipzig and purchased an interest in Die Grenzboten, a journal for politics and literature. In this enterprise he was associated with Julian Schmidt, and the organ was trans formed from an Austrian advocate to one of that. Qmfixixwfi. Party that sought to promote a timed.
