There are few German books that do not require some knowledge of an historical character, the very language itself which the student is studying is nothing but the result of the intellectual development of past ages bearing the imprints of historical events.To give a connected narrative of German history, extending over a period of two thousand years would require a large volume far beyond the scope of high school pupils, while, on the other hand, a short volume of this kind is apt to be a mere chronological list of historical events, so dry and uninteresting that it defeats its own purpose. The only alternative, therefore, would seem to be a collection of historical sketches, designed to create an interest in the student for the great and glorious past of a people whose language he is learning.It is not the sole object of this little volume to teach German history, but rather the German language by means of historical narrative. The book is a German reader, therefore, differing from other readers only in that it replaces fiction by historical facts, by an account of the great events that have shaped the destiny of the world.
