Excerpt from Autobiography of William G. Schauffler: For Forty-Nine Years a Missionary in the OrientThe autobiography herewith presented to the public was written by its author solely for the benefit of his children, and with no idea that it would ever be put into print. Indeed, so strong was his feeling on this subject, that it was with considerable reluctance that his sons yielded to the solicitation of many of their father's friends to make public this story of his life. With some omissions and verbal alterations, the narrative is published just as it was written for the home circle, and herein, perhaps, lies one of its chief attractions for those who knew the author. That it should be a somewhat disjointed narrative is a matter of course, in view of the circumstances under which it was written, (often lying for months untouched, ) and the necessity of cutting it down to its present dimensions. A few extracts from letters published in the Missionary Herald some fifty years ago, are added to the autobiography. It will be conceded by every thoughtful person that the youth of this generation need the stimulus of contact with the lives of those strong, self-made men who, in so many walks of life, adorned the earlier years of this century. When to personal independence of thought and action, and to mature scholarship, are added childlike trust in God, and whole-souled consecration to His service, the example grows still more worthy of imitation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
