The Bangudae Petroglyphs Institute of University of Ulsan and the Korea Studies Institute of Harvard University co-hosted "The First International Symposium on Petroglyphs" on April 26 and 27, 2012. In the symposium, held in Cambirdge, U.S., renowned international researchers of petroglyphs presented papers on the Bangudae petroglyphs and related subjects. The presenters and discussants all acknowledged the significance of opening the international discussion of this important site of East Asian history and prehistoric art. The book is based on the papers presented during the symposium. The chapters of this book consist of the articles by the 2012 Symposium presenters and discussants plus an appendix on the current state of Korean petroglyphs. Chapter¿, discusses production dates and production groups of the Bangudae Petroglyphs through the art trends in prehistoric and ancient Korea. Chapter II, seeks the Bangudae Petroglyphs relations with world spread images of whales ranging over Australia, Pacific Islands, South America, Mesoamerica, North America, Africa, Russia and Scandinavia. Chapter III, refers to the rock art traditions of Siberia for a research of the unique character of the Bangudae rock art site analyzing animal and shaman images of the area. Chapter ¿, takes structural approaches of Lévi-Strauss to analyze the Bangudae Petroglyphs and provides complementing explanation to the archaeological-historical diachronic approaches. Chapter ¿, is focusing on the importance of image, art-making, and visual meaning as an extended analysis of its "meaning, " by paying attention to the producer's intention. Chapter ¿, explains the cultural homogeneity between the Bangudae Petroglyphs and Altai Culture by comparing similar shaman figures with big hands. Chapter ¿, aims for registration of the Bangudae petroglyph on the World Heritage List by discussing the various strategies and factors for its eventual inclusion. Finally, the last chapter offers current state of Korean Petroglyphs.
