In a historic presidential win, Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, addressed the nation for the first time as President Elect. He will become the nation's first African American president when he is sworn into office on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009. Barack Hussein Obama II (born 1961) is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first African American to serve as president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 with 70 percent of the vote. In the 2008 presidential election, he won 53% of the popular vote and 364 Electoral College votes to become the 44th President of the United States.
