Josiah came of good English stock of Northamptonshire, where the Franklins owned a small farm and a smithy which regularly descended to the eldest son, while the youngest sou served as apprentice. Benjamin was the youngest son of the youngest son for many generations back. Not far away lived the ancestors of another great American who was associated with Franklin in the most momentous struggle that has engaged the attention of the American continent - George Washington.
