Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the GovernorDistrict number four - William D. Swart, Republican, of Nashua, was born in New Kingston, N. Y., July 9, 1856, and was educated in the public schools and at Wilbraham Academy. After engaging successfully in business in New York City and Newark, N. J he located in Nashua in 1890 and since that time has been one of the city's most prominent business men, as one of the owners of the Roby Swart Manufacturing Company and identified with many other interests. Colonel Swart, who gained his title from service on Governor Ramsdell's staff, is a 32d degree Mason, member of the Nashua and Vesper Country clubs and of the Boston Athletic Club. He attends the Congregational Church. He married Miss Lizzie A. Roby of Nashua and they have a son and a daughter. Colonel Swart has been president of the Nashua Board of Trade, president of the Nashua city council and fire commissioner of that city. He was a member of the House of Representatives of 1909 and of the State Senate of 1911, being elected to the presidency of that body.District number five - Edward Herman Carroll, Republican, was born in Sutton, October 30, 1854, the second son of Alonzo C. And Mercy A. (hale) Carroll. He received his education in the Si monds Free High School at Warner and was in the mercantile business there with his father until 1894, when, for two years, he was located in Manchester in the real estate and insurance business. Returning to Warner he has since continued his residence there, extensively engaged in farming and lumbering and real estate Operations. He was postmaster of Warner, 187 7 - 84 school board member, 1886 - 89, county treasurer, 1890 - 92, member of the Legislature, 1893, national bank examiner, 1898 - 1905, member of the Constitutional Convention of 1912. Mr. Carroll married, August 13, 1877, Susie C. Putney, and they have one son, Edward L., who is in business with his father. Councilor Carroll is a Universalist in religious belief, a Mason, Knight Templar and Shriner.
