It is of interest, perhaps, here to quote the original Preface to this first edition as it has been the keynote of all the subsequent ones. "In offering these few pages to my patients, I do not, for a moment, pretend to give them a complete treatise on children's diseases. Nor do I wish, in any way, to prevent their taking medical advice, where it can he obtained. On the contrary, I would earnestly caution them never to trust to their own judgment, when they can procure professional assistance.
