Born at Cawnpore, India, in September, 1832, his first scenes of active service were those of the Indian Mutiny, where he gained brilliant distinction, notably at the Siege of Delhi, and Relief of Lucknow. He went through the Abyssinian Expedition of 1867-8, and later commanded our forces in the Afghan War, 1879-80. It was during the latter cam paign that he gained such fame for the bravery and resource exhibited on the memorable march from Cabul to Kandahar, and the relief of Kandahar on September lst, 1880.
