Such tests were attempted on two occasions, but it was found that required observa tions simply could not be made well at night. The pri mary problem was the refraction of the bulldozer's lights and the observer's ¿ashlight through the thick cloud of dust. It was difficult or impossible to see well enough to anticipate when the slope was changing 5 percent or more, to identify landmarks for measuring points of slope changes and distances, and to read the Abney level.
