Excerpt from Carchemish, Vol. 2: Report on the Excavations at Jerablus on Behalf of the British Museum, The Town DefencesThen came the interruption of the war, when the knowledge of the East possessed by all these gentlemen was placed at the service of the Intelligence Branches of the British forces Operating in Egypt, Arabia, Palestine, and Mesopotamia, so that they became known in wider fields than those of archaeology as lieut.-commander D. G. Hogarth, lieut.-colonel T. E. Lawrence, C.D., Major C. L. Woolley, and Captain R. C. Thompson. Meanwhile the site, at Carchemish and the sculptures that had been uncovered in the preceding seasons were protected by the native staff who had worked there, and suffered only from a little minor looting by Turkish officers. At the conclusion of the armistice, Mr. Woolley (who had had the misfortune to be a prisoner during the latter part of the war) was again employed in the East, and at once took the opportunity of preparing for the resumption of work. Jerablus was within the area that was placed under French administration, and it was with the permission and assistance of the French authorities (notably General Gouraud) that excavations were carried on in the spring of 4920. Mr. Woolley was again in charge of the work, but Mr. Lawrence's services were required elsewhere, and his place was taken by Capt. P. L. O.
