Cassell's Anthology of English Verse (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Cassell's Anthology of English VerseThe selection of poems for this anthology has evidently been made with great care. Mr. Glover has followed the doctrine of Wordsworth in a famous passage of the Prelude, that the young reader must know where he has friends, and that these friends are more likely to be found among poets of his own generation than among even the greater spirits of a remote past. Whatever may be the range ulti mately attained, it is evident that a child will enter more easily into the worlds made for him by the poets of his own time. Mr. Glover's selection passes lightly over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, dwells a little longer on the eighteenth, and ends by introducing the reader to an unusual number of modern poets. In the anthology one-half the ground is covered by writers whose names come after Tennyson's in the list. The introduction of so large a proportion of modern poetry is beneficial to the teacher as well as the pupil. It will give him the feeling that he is working with a new instrument specially designed for his purpose and shaped to fit his hand.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
