It is 2nd May 1997, the day after Tony Blair wins the election. Alexander Cassius Blackburn, a thirty-nine year old, poor, recently qualified lawyer needs a case to keep his job. He manages to represent Josephine King, who only has one arm and admits hitting Oliver Parker with it. The case is adjourned for sentencing but just before the next hearing Parker dies and King is charged with murder. King's solicitor, Zoe Avery, likes Cassius and the feeling is mutual, though she is rich and her father, Justin de Wynne Q.C, is the new lawyer for the prosecution and considers Cassius rabble. Cassius cannot defend someone accused of murder but continues with the help of Eamon Flynn and Zoe. Cassius argues with Zoe's father in his personal as well as his professional life. One witness is kidnapped, another, scared, hides. De Wynne forces Zoe to abandon King. She goes to Barcelona and discovers information useful to Cassius. De Wynne's clients, The Ramshaws, have financial problems because King refuses to return some trial drugs to them so they want her in prison. Judgment is given 19th March 2003, the day before the Iraq war.
