Category Cueing: Increasing Recall to Reduce FalseRecognition

Memory is subject to a range of distortions. But
mechanisms that
protect memory against distortion also exist. This
book focuses on
recall-to-reject, one of the central memory editing
mechanisms
thought to prevent the occurrence of false memories.
Recall-to-
reject occurs when recall of a studied item is used
to correctly reject
an associated distractor despite its high
familiarity. The theoretical
part of this dissertation gives an overview of memory
editing
mechanisms and reviews experimental research on the
recall-to-
reject process. In the empirical part a series of
four experiments is
reported, where the ability of category cues to
increase the
probability of the recall-to-reject process is
investigated.
Furthermore, moderating factors for the effectiveness
of recall-to-
reject are investigated. Overall, the results provide
evidence for
recall-to-reject and demonstrate its potential to
reduce false
recognition errors. Theoretical, methodological, as
well as practical,
implications are discussed. This book is recommended
to people
interested in experimental memory research.
