Chapenga's White Man

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Chapenga's White Man: A Story of Central Africa He was part of the spoil of some village that Mlozi and his men had raided, his parents had been killed in the night attack, and if he had any brothers and sisters - Beck-ford used to say that he trusted, for the sake of humanity in general, Chapenga was an only child-nobody knows what became of them. So Chapenga became the property of Saidi, son of Abdalla, and had to make himself generally useful - carrying Saidi's personal effects on the march, spreading his sleeping-mat at night, handing his pipe and his coffee, washing up the cups, and cleaning out the pots after the women had done cooking. This last occupation involved the eating of whatever rice or porridge was left in the pots, and was an important item to Chapenga: for he got no regular meals.
