Excerpt from Charles Chapin's Story Written in Sing Sing Prison
The writer of this book had been at Sing Sing but a very short time when my younger friend asked me if I would see the new arrival. Here again'my own books had prepared the way for me, and, as far as the conditions per mitted, our coming together was not differ ent from what it would have been had we met at a club. My recollection is that we talked of the public interests of the day, of literature, and of the scene around us. As to the last there was not a murmur of complaint. In subsequent meetings we have kept to the same tone, though we could not have become as friendly as we are without an element of what I may call mutual solicitude stealing into our intercourse.
