Peters, Prunellidae, Orthonychinae, Picathartinae, Timaliinae, Turdinae, Panurinae, PolioptilinaeThis volume differs little in scope and style from the two preceding volumes (ix and XV), which were the first to be published as a cooperative endeavor after the death of Mr. Peters. One minor change is the elimination of vernacular names. Criticisms of Volumes IX and XV centered on the selection of English names, which had been added in the hope of facilitating the use of the Check-list by the growing number of amateur ornithologists. There was no attempt to propose new vernaculars or to pass judgment on those already in use, they were merely taken from a series of Widely-used ornithological works written in English. However, the critics of these names seem to feel that an effort Should be made to standardize and supply appropriate English names for all species. Because this would require cumbersome polls and other elaborate procedures beyond the scope of a scientific work, the editors requested the advice of the twelve authors of this and forthcoming volumes.
