The trials of the criminals were in progress, I endeavored to obtain information of their course and termination. The letters of Col. Stone upon Masonry and Antimasonry were addressed to me in consequence of inquiries made by. Me, to another person, and communicated to him. With regard to the facts ascertained by those trials, the reports made to the legislature, of New York, and the proceedings of the first Antimasonic convention, held at Philadelphia, with the essays of William Slade upon the Masonic penalties, and the defense of Masonry by the grand lodge of Rhode Island, all concurred in furnishing a mass of information from which my conclusions were deduced.
