J. Mason Christopher, Viet Nam veteran and Washington D.C. patent attorney, quits his law firm and travels to Cold Water, Indiana, a church town where his daughter supposedly killed herself while investigating the town's recent rash of suicides. Christopher believes it was murder and teams up with the truck stop owner "Lady" Mcphearson to find out who killed his daughter-ans why.
With the aid of Christopher's Nam buddies, he and Lady dig beneath the surface of the church's control of the community, and learn that the corrupt Pastor Kelly Baines is exploiting the town's water system. The pastor's professional killer rigs the murders to appear as suicides, but when Christopher's team closes in on him, Pastor Kelly Baines, crippled in body and mind, Viet Nam veteran, counters his pursuers with increasing ruthlessness until the novel's explosive end.
