Excerpt from Colleges Religious Institutions: A Discourse Delivered in the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark, Oct, 29, 1851 Before the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the WestWe deceive ourselves then, when we imagine the first of a series of events, all tending to a com mon result, to be greater and better than all the rest, simply because it is the first. There is, in fact, a common honor due to agencies that cooperate for the same end. That is the greatest, whether it be the first or the last, which is the most efficacious, and the end is greater than all. The first may be the least of all the events in the series. SO our Sa viour represents the beginning of true piety in the soul of man, when he says, The kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard-seed, which when it is sown in the earth, is less than all seeds that be in the earth but it becometh greater than all herbs.
