Community Breeding in Ohio (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Community Breeding in Ohio The development of the breeds of livestock in Ohio, from a community point of view, has taken place in two very distinct ways: first, without special plan or purpose, and second, thru organized promotion. As early as 1807 Seth Adams brought a few Merino sheep to Ohio. This was the pioneer effort to introduce sheep of improved breeding to the state. During the first half of the nineteenth century, eastern Ohio became a great center of Merino breeding, to the serious exclusion of all other breeds of sheep. In fact, from 'this early period, sheep husbandry in Ohio has been dominated by Merino interests, so that we may fairly say that here existed a natural development of a breed within a well defined community.
