But as the century hastened to its mid-point, unifying, liberal principles gained headway among the people Of central Europe. In 1847, democratic programmes vied with nationalistic creeds for the attention of the people. Prussia, in that year, had convoked a United Diet which had quarreled with the King and had been dissolved.
