Excerpt from Cotton Spinning For the past thirty-five years I have taken the deepest interest in educational work connected with the cotton industry, feeling that a widespread knowledge of its activities must be of advantage to the public. A generation has passed since, as Managing Partner in a well-known firm of cotton spinners, manufacturers and merchants, I began the issue of brochures and books in which the different manufacturing processes of cotton and other textiles were described in a non-technical way. A keen public interest led to a great demand for these books, which showed that the manufacturing processes in an industry could, by popular treatment, be made not only instructive but interesting to the general reader. This educational work I supplemented by extensive propaganda when I became associated with the national and international organisations of the great cotton industry. During the twenty-one years I was President of the English Federation of Master Cotton Spinners, embracing fourteen Associations, and during the eleven years in which I was President of the International Cotton Federation, I took the initiative in giving to the world through the public Press, through annual reports and periodical reviews, all possible information about this industry, which was and is the life blood of Great Britain's Export Trade.
