Crop Injury by Borax in Fertilizers (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Crop Injury by Borax in FertilizersTo many the statement that this small amount of borax1 was harmful to germination and produced such marked physiological effects as complete bleaching of the leaves of plants, even though used in the drill, seemed incredible. Accordingly, it was decided to undertake preliminary experiments along this line during the season of 1919, and for this purpose 1 ton of potash salt manufactured from the deposits of Searles Lake, Calif., was obtained. This potash salt, which on analysis proved to contain per cent of borax (nazb4o7), was used in complete fertilizers having 2' to 8 per cent of potash and was compared with potash from other sources. The experiments were carried out in cooperation with farmers in the States of Maine, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, N orth Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, with potatoes in the Northern States and as far south as North Carolina and with cotton in the Southern States.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
