GREATLY RESPECTED: Claxton is known across North America as a leading indigenous artist and a strong voice fighting the stereotypes of indigenous peoples in our culture. This book accompanies an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in the fall of 2018.
HUNKPAPA: Claxton is from the Hunkpapa Lakota people whose traditional territory includes the northern plains states of North and South Dakota, Montana and the prairie provinces of Canada (she was born in Saskatchewan). Lakota spirituality and honor toward her ancestors are very important to her artistic practice. Her ancestors include those who were at the Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee. In her own life she has been actively involved in the Standing Rock protests in South Dakota, participating in the Sitting Bull Sundance. Much of her artistic work focuses on the civil rights struggles of the Lakota, such as the American Indian Movement.
BROAD PRACTICE: Claxton is a multidisciplinary artist whose media include video, performance, photography, print, textiles and costume. In addition to her artistic work, she is a university educator, writer, and TV and radio producer.
LONG OVERDUE: Given the strength and respect that her work has garnered through her career, it is surprising that this is the first major book on her work.
