Excerpt from Dances of the Olden Time: Arranged for the Pianoforte
Chief among old English dances is the country dance. This retained favour for three or four centuries, and was only ousted from popular approval by the quadrille and the lancers, to which it has many points of similarity. In regard to its name it must be distinctly stated that it derives nothing from Contra-danse, the French equivalent. This term is, merely a. Foreign rendering of the English word, and is not to be taken as indicating the position of the dancers at the commencement - that is, opposite each other. Our English country dance was one originally performed by the English rustic people, afterwards becoming a favourite in the ball room, where it gave as much enjoyment as on the village green.
