Excerpt from Dandin's Kavyadarsa, Vol. 2: Parichchheda II, Edited With a New Sanskrit Commentary and English Notes, Second Half
It became soon obvious that any such classificatory principle or principles, would gradually tend to become inadequate, as there would always remain some Alam karas recognised by rhetoricians and falling outside their scope Thus of the 35 or rather 34 Alamkaras recognised by Dandin the following 14 are not includ ed in the above listz - anaffi, enact, 2g, gen, Em, ¿ag, 3. M.m. Swim, fies, fins, mannerfimw'n, and am: (not to mention sw). Some of these, 9. G., Elm, mart, Wm, are sometimes classed as -w while was, wins, 61mm, mtgfi and emit: will have to be classed as We, i. E., merely as effective modes of expression, such as those enumerated by Bharata in the beginning of the l6th chapter of the Natyasastra. The tendency towards a wanton increase merely in the number of the Alamkaras (and of subdivisions within an Alamkara), which marked the latest phase in the history of the Alamkarasastra, made any at tempt to trace the Alamkaras to their 'éfi'g-t - such as Dandin contemplates - an altogether hopeless task.
