After nearly a year away from her husband and her two young sons, Rachel, with her toddler daughter, Dottie, can hardly wait to reach Virginia. Now her life can settle down. However, painful memories haunt her in the ocean voyage to America.
When she arrives in Blackburg, Virginia, one family adventure after another awaits. Her happiness would be complete if only she could convince her father to join them in America. She fears be is grieving himself to death in Germany. Her children are growing up without their grandfather and she needs her father.
As their family grows, many changes bring challenges for the family. Life on the expanding family farm seems idyllic, and then the Great Depression hits the small community as well as the rest of the country.
