Although happy at home, the girls are grateful to a well-to-do maternal aunt who widens their horizons. Lizzie, with the reluctant approval of her parents, is determined to become a dancer. She achieves her ambition shortly before the outbreak of the Great War, and enjoys success as a soloist. In time, her personal life conflicts with her profession, and she is faced with difficult choices.
