Excerpt from Determination of Dynamic Loads in a High-Frequency Direct-Stress Fatigue MachineThe deflection of the dynamometer was measured visually by a beam of light Which indicated the static and dynamic loads directly on a scale. The static loads were indicated by a sharp line of light and the dynamic loads were indicated by a band of light. The mean load, which appeared as a narrow line when the machine did not oscillate, corresponded to the average of the extreme values of the light band during operation of the machine.
