Devil's Folly is a darkly atmospheric novel that incorporates elements of the occult into its narrative. The story opens with an account of a ritual cruxifixion that unleashes the forces of evil. The action developes over a long period of time, moving from the ninteeth century into the future. The author successfully weaves an aura of evil into the fabric of the story in his vivid descriptions of death, murder and revenge, bringing the novel to a powerful conclusion, in which, in a reversal of the biblical cruxifixion, the son of the Devil materialises upon the cross. From the outset, the reader is drawn into the intense atmosphere of ritual and death. Like long red scars, the blood from the wounds in the priest's feet had run the length of his body to reach the tip of his chin. Before congealing some of the red liquid had formed into globules. Like large red tears they dropped to the ground, where they were greedily absorbed by the porous chalk.
