Two years later the city Of Zurich granted him a public scholarship to enable him to con tinue at Heidelberg and Berlin the studies he had begun at the University in his native city. After an absence of seven years, in which there appeared from his pen a second volume Of poems and the novel above-mentioned, he returned home to settle. He was appointed secretary of the Canton of Zu rich, remaining in Office from 1861 to 1876, when he resigned to resume his literary labors, which had practically rested dur ing his Official career.
