Excerpt from Diseases of the Upper Respiratory Tract: The Nose, Pharynx Larynx This Manual is intended to supply a want I have long felt in my capacity as a teacher of clinical medicine, viz., an introduction to the study of disease of the upper air passages that might serve as a practical guide to students and practitioners, and as a stepping stone to the larger and more comprehensive works, whose very wealth of detail renders them less suitable for beginners. Written by a physician, it deals especially with the medical aspect of rhinology and laryngology, while in order to render it as complete as possible within the prescribed limits, I have endeavoured to place before the reader the opinions of the recognised authorities on the surgical treatment. Only to a very limited degree can I lay claim to originality, as my purpose has been simply to reflect the present state of knowledge in this department of medicine. Illustration is essential in describing affections, the diagnosis of which largely depends on the appearances presented, and, with few exceptions, I have reproduced sketches from my clinical notes, believing that they will convey the most accurate idea of the aspects of disease, without elaboration.
