His apology for the delay will he found, not only in public and private duties which allowed him little leisure, but also in the fact, which he has mentioned in the Introduction, that the work assumed a character materially different from that which was contemplated, when he engaged to edit for the Society The Domesday of St. Paul's of the year The pledge then given would have been redeemed by a brief account of that Manuscript, a catalogue of names and places, and of its general contents.
