Excerpt from Double Harness To see Anthony Hope as a writer of a problem novel is to see him in a new light, and to read Double Harness (McClure, Phillips & Co.) is to assure, yourself of considerably more than the casual pleasure which attends the reading of a new book. While Mr. Hawkins has dwelt upon the most serious problem of life - the marriage vow and the preservation of the home - he has done it with so much delicacy and honesty of purpose that he does not offend in any particular. Double Harness introduces you to a group of people who for the time being become your world. First in importance are Grantley Imason and his wife Sibylla. She is a dream woman, an idealist - unreal but wonderfully interesting, while he is one of the most attractive characters that Mr. Hawkins has ever drawn. Sweet, indeed, is the courtship of these two. Marriage, however, brings with it a shattering of ideals, and Sibylla for no good reason becomes a woman with a grievance, while Grantley waits patiently and grimly for her to see and to understand things as they really are. There is a dramatic and well-nigh tragic scene one stormy night at a little inn called "Sailors Rest, " in which her husband saves her from herself and from another. Then there are half a dozen other admirable types whose inner lives are analyzed for the benefit of the reader. While some persons may look upon Double Harness as a satire, there is nothing satirical about it. It is written with such breadth of sympathy with human nature, and such charity for its frailties, that the reader is left in a hopeful frame of mind, being assured that there is a happy solution for every sex problem.
