But I desire to connect my memory with the locality to which God's Providence has conducted me, and with the people whom I have already learned to love passing well. I shall be satisfied with their applause, and shall think myself amply recompensed for this, my first literary venture, if the publication of these Verses shall have the effect of drawing them nearer to me, and me to them.
