Excerpt from Early Days of Peoria and Chicago: An Address Read Before the Chicago Historical Society at a Quarterly Meeting Held January 19, 1904Heyward proceeded on his journey by way of the portage and the Illinois River to Peoria, where he found a few F renchmen living among the Indians, one of whom was Captain May, doubtless Jean Baptiste Maillet, whose name in F rench is said to have a sound much resembling May or Mai.
