Excerpt from Effects of Grazing Intensity Upon Vegetation and Cattle Gains on Ponderosa Pine-Bunchgrass Ranges of the Front Range of ColoradoThe soils have developed primarily from Pikes Peak granite, which is characterized by quartz and large orthoclase crystals with mica as an accessory mineral. The surface soils, 12 to 18 inches thick, con tain low amounts of organic matter, and are slightly acid, loose, and Open, with a sandy-loam texture. Some areas have sandy clay sub soils, but the most common subsoils are coarse sandy loams that grade into the unconsolidated parent material at a depth of 30 to 40 inches. Although slopes of this valley are commonly less than 20 percent, the soils erode readily when they are not protected by a mantle of vegetation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
