Wm. Howe Downes in an essay on 'art Criticism which appears in the January American Magazine of Art introduces his subject as follows: Re cognition is a vital need of the artist: he hungers and thirs'ts for appreciation and understanding. He can not do his best without sympathy. In that respect he is Very much like all the rest of the World, only more So. The art critic, however. Does not exist solely or even chiefly for the benefit of the artist. His primary purpose should be to bring the public into contact with art for the m'utual advantage of both sides. Art ought to be brought into closer connec tion with life, every day life, and the peoa ple Ought to be more directly interested in art, if only as an escape from sor didness, ugliness, vulgarity and dullness.
