Excerpt from Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty National Monument, Vol. 2: Existing Condition Survey, Unit One Buildings, Appendix DThis interior architectural survey of Unit One buildings consists of a room-by-room analysis of all visually accessible finishes, decorative trim, doors, lighting, plumbing, and heating equipment. Nearly 200 survey forms were completed at the site. On these, the room number, last known use, square footage, ceiling height, and date of survey are recorded. The surface materials in each space are described and assessed for their existing condition and approximate date. A summary condition and date has been tabulated based on this information. In cases where sizable portions of the room are from different periods, more than one date has been given. Rooms are also evaluated for relative architectural significance within the building. Photographs of each room supplement the written description, however, in some instances photographic coverage was limited due to the accumulation of debris.Room numbers were assigned by the surveyor in a roughly clockwise order and do not represent any historical numbering systems.The definition of square footage used for calculations was the area of each room measured from the inside edge of the exterior and/or principal walls in each space, including both structural and non-structural interior walls.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
