Excerpt from Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty National Monument, Vol. 4: Historic Structure Report, Units 2, 3 and 4, Part TwoThe office building and the mortuary building were constructed during the fall of 1908 through the spring of 1909 and were opened for occupancy in June of 1911 as part of the new Island 3 hospital complex. This complex was developed out of a growing need for contagious disease facilities on Ellis Island, contagious disease cases having been sent, since the 18905, to the New York City Health Department. In June 1902, George W. Stoner, surgeon in charge of the medical division, urged the construction of a separate pavilion containing isolation and observation wards for contagious diseases. In. September cfif that year, the recommendation for the construction of a contagious disease hospital on Ellis Island became an urgent matter: the New York City Health Department had informed immigration officials of its intention to terminate its contract for receiving aliens with contagious diseases. Plans were immediately undertaken for the construction of a new 3 acre island located about 800 feet southwest of the existing Ellis Island on which the new contagious disease hospital would be built.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
