Elroy, raised in family traditions of honor and respect in the deep south, is "duty bound" to join the Marine Corps and enter the Viet Nam War effort. He returns to the Silver Oaks Plantation a hero and a changed man. There is hope after anguish. He brings the love of his life home to meet his parents, but is met with dismayal, prejudice and anger.
