Excerpt from Emilia Galotti: Ein Trauerspiel in Fünf AufzügenLachmann's text of Emilia Galotti is based on the last reprint of the drama published during the lifetime of the poet. This reprint is usually designated as 1772 d, as it was preceded by three others in the same year. There exists, however, a manuscript in the poet's own handwriting (now in the possession of the Royal Library at Berlin), which in four instances Offers a better text than the reprint, and which the editor has followed in the present edition. These cases are: (1) The ms. Reads non etmab unterm, while the reprint has con etmaé anbem (of. P. 12, l. (2) the ms. Has tie iungen sbeute, the reprint tie junge Reute (cf. P. 23, According to strict rule the adjective in the first case after etmaé should be in¿ected according to the strong declension, in the latter case after the definite article according to the weak declension. (3) While the ms. Contains the form verbirbt, the reprint has netbetbt (cf. P. 26, l. 11) for which nerbirbt is now commonly used. (4) The ms. Reads ibn mifien Iafien, the reprint has ibm, which is obsolete (cf. P. 40, l. Other variant readings of the ms., at least the principal ones, are mentioned in the notes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
