End of the Lupine Season chronicles a naive young girl's life as she experiences the passion of first love, the complexities of family and motherhood, the importance of friendship, and sadly, grief and tragedy.
It was the spring of 1950 when timid, eighteen-year-old Gudrun Carlson arrived on the dock in La Pointe, Wisconsin amidst a raging Lake Superior storm. She was there to take a job as a domestic on Madeline Island. It was not only her first real job, but her first time beyond the confines of St. Paul and watchful eye of a domineering mother, who had died that winter, leaving her alone.
Little did Gudrun know, standing in the wind and rain, that this "rock" and the vast lake that surrounded it would become the place she would always call home. Life was not always kind to Gudrun, but in the end, she learned forgiveness for others and for herself. As her best friend had told her many times, "Beating yourself up about the past don't do anybody any good."
Gudrun would always keep the Island alive in her heart and soul: the storms, the lupines blooming, and the people who became her family.
