Excerpt from English Army Lists and Commission Registers, 1661 1714, Vol. 3: 1689 1694The present volume, which takes in the English, Scots, and Irish military establishments, covers the eventful period from 13 February 1689 to 23 April 1694 - a time of uninterrupted war with France and Of internal rebel lion, for the first two and a half years, in Scotland and Ireland. These five years of war with France did not redound to the glory of British arms on the Continent. The important fortresses of Mons and N amur were taken by the French - the former in 1691, and the latter in 1692. The British and their allies, under the King Of Great Britain, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the renowned Duke of Luxembourg at Steinkirk in 1692, and at Landon a year later. Uncle Toby was wont to say that the English soldiers learnt to swear terribly in Flanders, at the time we write of, and we may naturally conclude that this bad habit arose from repeated ill success in battle. Even the phlegmatic William III.
