Excerpt from Er Ist Nicht Eifersu¿chtig: Lustspiel in Einem AktThis little comedy has been a favorite in American schools for thirty years, and is recommended for early reading by the Committee of Twelve of the Modern Language Association in the report adopted at the session of 1899. That z'mprz'matur relieves an editor of the necessity of discussing its fitness, ethical, artistic or linguistic for school use. To apply to such a tri¿e the canons of serious criticism would be uncritical. Charac ters and situations are not natural, but they are not meant to be. On the other hand the language of the little play, which most concerns the pupil, is simplicity itself, and it has been found possible to put all necessary explanations in the vocabulary. With regard to the author, Alexander Elz, the usual bibliographical sources of information are silent. He himself figures in the catalogue of the British Museum only as the author of a story in Polish. This play was first printed in Bloch's dilettanten-biihne No. 13, which must have appeared in 1858 or-1859. In the present text the spelling has been modernized according to the Prussian.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
