Moreover, reading, being receptive only and not requiring the thorough preparation of a productive knowledge like writing and speaking, is not only the most useful of all branches of language-study, it is also the easiest to acquire. It, therefore, should and can receive its due share of atten tion even in our most elementary instruction, when pupils are usually obliged to spend too much time in memorizing facts of pronunciation and grammatical rules and paradigms, while their reading is largely confined to a few isolated and fragmentary words and phrases illustrative of the grammar assigned from day to day.
